I've just completed a series of interviews for Australian radio and television during the past few days as Macmillan have recently launched And Thereby Hangs a Tale in Australia, a month later than the British. This requires being up either late at night, or early in the morning. For example, I did Alan Jones's 2GB radio show in Sydney at 11.30pm, and Radio 3AW Melbourne at 7am the next morning. On air, they're telling me the Australians will win the Ashes 5-0; off-air, they're admitting they're two fairly evenly matched sides, and it should be a very good five match rubber.
The other subject that continually arose, quite naturally, was Australia having its first woman Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. For those of you who do not follow Australian politics closely, Miss Gillard forced a coup which removed their sitting PM, Mr Kevin Rudd, to the back benches. Whether she can get the Labour Party back in contention in time for the election in a few month's time, will be fascinating to watch - though I expect more people will be watching the Ashes. Australia is now a country ruled over by three women: the Monarch, Her Majesty The Queen, the Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, and their new Prime Minister, Miss Julia Gillard. Sheila 1, Sheila 2 and Sheila 3.

Hope you don't see the fact of Australia being ruled by Sheila 1, Sheila 2 and Sheila 3 as a problem, do you? Even if they have not been personally elected by us. Unfortunately we still haven't been able to "shake off" "Sheila" 1 and 2 and "Sheila" 3 may not be in charge for long but whatever happens, the term "Sheila" is not really how I would refer to these women. Maybe I am being too sensitive...(Hopefully!)
