A weekend spent in London saw a visit to the cinema to see State of Play starring Russell Crowe, a serious thinking-man's thriller with twists and turns and a good story. Russell Crowe was very convincing as a paunchy, overworked journalist, working for a serious newspaper in financial trouble. Lunch on Sunday with my son William at the River Cafe. I don't get to the River Cafe that often, not least because it's the other side of town. Not a seat in the place, and the food as always, was excellent. Though I'm bound to ask, am I the only person who dislikes waiters scraping left-over food from plate to plate when they clear the table? When I asked my waitress about this, she said, "If I don't, it means I'd have to come back two or three times." Well that may be a good enough reason for the customer not to come back two or three times. Back to the apartment to watch John Higgins win the World Snooker Championship for the third time, to the delight of his many fans, myself included. I had the great privilege of being President of the World Snooker Association when John won his first title, and he disproves the theory that nice guys don't win. They don't come much nicer.

Jeffrey,
I've been to the River Cafe twice - both times, within days of each other but, a couple of years ago now...
Anyway, the first time with clients, the second, a couple of days later, with family (who, despite warnings, insisted...)
The meals..? Wonderful!
But... the scrapping of food between plates..?!
Embarassing (to say the VERY least)! And, leaving a feeling of cheapness; which the prices certainly don't reflect!
Anyway, forget it!
I've always believed one pays for the "total package" at a restaurant. Or, anywhere else, for that matter.
The River Cafe, certainly doesn't do it for me.
For what it's worth, agree with you totally about John Higgins. Fantastic...
scrapping leftovers from plate to plate might look distasteful...but you should see some things which go in behind the scenes- inside the kitchens... (hope u have seen the program WHEN CHEFS ATTACK)
There is a good side ...an assurance, they do not serve the left-overs to a new customers!
Well, on a lighter note, it shows what is likely to happen in our own body when digestion starts. Inside outside !!
Dear Mr. Archer
