What's that noise?

On our usual trip to the Cambridge Arts Theatre this weekend, Mary and I saw Agatha Christie's Murder on Air, three short plays, but with a difference. The set is a radio studio, and the key person on stage is not the actor, but the special effects man, as you the audience, observe how the BBC produce a radio play. The parts are read into a microphone front of the stage, while the special effects man is closing train doors, drinking champagne, kissing, clapping and adding several other interesting noises which amused the audience tremendously. The plays were enhanced greatly by the performance of Nicky Henson, who played a murderer, a barrister and an old buffer. He's one of our under-rated actors, who delivers at every level. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
