The Donmar and The Almeida have for several years set a standard in theatre productions that is the envy not only of the world, but many a more established West End theatre. Last night I went to see Waste at the Almeida, where it has rightly received critical acclaim. Although 100 years old, the political tragedy that unfolds is as relevant today as it has ever been, which may account for its massive success. The show is sold out until the end of the run, and you can't get a ticket unless you're willing to queue for returns. During the interval, Neil Constable introduced me to the Almeida's new chairman, Christopher Rodrigues, who told me that although the nation appears to be entering a recession, the theatre has recently announced its programme right through until 2010. If future productions are of the same standard as last night's performance, there will be a lot more queues for returns during the next two years.
