Last night I attended Paul Elliott's 50 Years in Showbusiness party at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Paul has had a distinguished career as a theatre impressario and producer -indeed he's up for a Tony Award having produced Patrick Stewart in Macbeth which is currently running to packed houses on Broadway. 200 friends and colleagues turned out to congratulate Paul, and the list of celebrities was so long that it would fill several pages of my blog, although it was fun to see Sir Donald Sinden arguing with Leslie Phillips as to the year they first appeared together at Stratford. Sinden settled on 1823, although Phillips was convinced it was earlier. So many of those present talked about the parlous state theatre is in at the moment, mind you, I've been going to theatre parties for more than 30 years, and without exception that has always been the subject on the lips of every producer, director and actor - as I'm sure it will be in 50 years time.

respected sir.. irrelevant as it maybe to your blog i had no other way of contactling you... I am from india n a HUGE fan of your writings.. Prisoner of birth i a mind blowing piece of work n i read it in two days flat coz i couldn't put it down... but honestly sons of fortune was way better than any other book i have ever read... Am really unlucky to not have met you whilst you were in india!! anyways at the risk of sounding tad bit colloquial , you rock!!
